[Hopper kept telling her that she couldn't contact Mike, couldn't talk to him even though she listened to him every night when he talked to her. That they would all be safer that way. Mike never believed that she was dead. Maybe because she was outside of his house once and he saw her. Since then El was in hiding, unable to tell them that hadn't died. There's so much they don't know yet.
If El wasn't going to like Max it would be because of her own feelings. She isn't entirely sure what to do with them at the moment, especially considering she doesn't even know why she feels this way. Right now, Max seems nice enough so she'll hold off. Hopefully Mike's own feelings won't have too much of an influence on her.
