Mike definitely hasn't been here before and has no idea who the older boy is who he's following, but he's almost too afraid to ask in case talking is too much noise and attracts whatever is lurking in the dark to attack. Maybe he's gotten used to the threat of the sound eaters to act that way.

Then something steals the rat for dinner, an arm belonging to what the closest thing Mike can describe it to is a zombie, and Mike lets out a scream. He'd feel bad about making noise but whatever the thing is made noise first so it probably doesn't matter that Mike's added to it. If there are others - and Mike doesn't know if there are, but he has a bad feeling and his bad feelings are usually right - they're coming.
