Heh, I used the gray and changed the words because there isn't a good heart color for it.

When Rei says something like "I remember you exist," it means someone has gained a certain amount of permanence. In canon, she only ever speaks about two people by name. Shinji is Ikari-kun. His father Gendo is Commander Ikari. Everyone else is "Major," "Classmate," "The pilot of unit 2." She barely even acknowledges that they exist, save for her job.

So, think of it as an early stage in her development. People are starting to 'persist' in her mind. A step before she actually begins caring about them.
