TEST DRIVE MEME

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message.

Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid. You're to settle into your new home.

Caught me unawares
Content Warnings: Confusion, disorientation
Themes: Survival, horror, it's like groundhog day

The ending of the floor has caught me unawares. This must be the reason why I’m falling down the stairs.

That night, when you fall asleep, you dream of your life before The Quiet Place. At first it's the happiest moments of your life played on repeat, over and over. Everything good and sweet and fun. The second night, it's much the same. You go to bed anticipating another restful and pleasant sleep. But on the third night it changes.

For everyone, it starts the same. There's a long hallway with a door at the end. You walk towards it with nowhere else to go. You twist the knob and when you step forward, the floor ends and you fall. Falling lasts for seconds, minutes, or hours and when you land, it's with a jolt and a cloud of red dust all around you. There's someone else next to you, stumbling, coughing and choking on that familiar dirt that coats your tongue and mouth. When your eyes meet, everything blurs and you're falling again - this time, when you land, it's inside that dream from the first night. Only you're not alone. They're with you. The only way out is to experience the dream together. And when you do wake up, for real, that same red dirt is on your hands.

That night, when you fall asleep, you dream of your life before The Quiet Place. At first it's the worst moments of your life played on repeat, over and over. Everything bad and sour and awful. The second night, it's much the same. You go to bed anticipating another restless and dreadful sleep. But on the third night it changes.

For everyone, it starts the same. There's a long hallway with a door at the end. You walk towards it with nowhere else to go. If they find they can't escape, Sora can always try to summon a Dream Eater. Considering this is technically a dream, he should be able to in order to chase the nightmare away. Then they can watch the happy moments to go with all of these bad ones. He wants to know everything about the people in his heart - the ones he's forgotten or never properly got the chance to meet like Aqua, Terra and Ventus. In the time Sora spent with Nami in the Facility, she became like a sister to him. Someone he treasures even if he can't remember everything.

A shake of his head. "A drawing can be a good luck charm too. I'll keep it safe forever."

He watches the next dream memory and easily recognizes the other person in it. This one might be shorter but just as important.

"I'll have to remember to punch Axel when I see him again. And he's wrong. I'll explain later."

A good idea, actually. They'd have to keep that in mind if it became too much to bear, which it hopefully shouldn't since she was pretty accustomed to the memories by now after two days in a row of dreaming of them.

"He's not all too bad in the end, and he helped me out a few times since then. I don't know why he felt the need to be as rude as Marluxia and Larxene, though. Everyone was always picking on me..." Naminé sighs slightly. "Ah... the next one should start having you in it, I think."

[5:19-8:25]

The setting this time is an island, with darkness swirling around it. Sora, looking determined, stands there across from her, looking around.

"Naminé! Can you hear me?" He turns around suddenly to see her, as she smiles at him with melancholy. "Naminé..." he runs towards her, excited.

"Sora... you really came for me." She almost sounds surprised, as Sora nods and grins, reaching out to take her by the hand, his two hands engulfing her small one. "It's you... It's really you. I've been through so much just to see you."

"Yes. I wanted to see you, too. But this isn't right. I messed up. I wanted to see you... but this isn't the right way." Her head hangs, her hand clenched by her side before raising up to rest against her heart. "I was so lonely for so long. I just couldn't bear it anymore. So I called out to your heart and had you come all the way out to this place. You came for me and I'm so... so happy, but... but to your heart I had to--"

Sora shakes his head. "Don't worry. I'm here because I promised that I would protect you."

"Sora... thank you." Naminé looks happy, at least to some degree, with that hint of sadness still remaining. "And I'm sorry." She pulls her hand out of his, as he reaches out towards her as she does. "I'm not supposed to be in this picture."

"That's true." Somehow, a more ethereal Naminé appears behind Sora, her voice causing him to turn around in confusion. "Naminé?!"

"That isn't me. I'm not there," says the second Naminé. "I don't really exist inside your heart." says the first. "I don't exist in anyone's heart." adds the second. "I never have existed anywhere."

"What... what are you saying? What's gotten into you?" says Sora, obviously confused and slightly upset. "Weren't we inseperable, always together? But then you had to go away... I came here so I'd never lose you again!"

"Was it really me, you wanted to see?" says the second Naminé, hand against her chest and looking almost amused in her sadness.

"Of course it was! I know I've forgotten a lot of things in this castle, but never anything about you!" Sora reaches into his pocket and pulls out a star charm identical to the one in the first memory, holding it out to her. "Look! You gave this to me, didn't you?"

"You have it! My good luck charm." The first Naminé smiles gently, hands clasped. "No, Sora! You can't believe me!" the second interrupts, as the first turns away from Sora, grasping her arm behind her back.

"What am I supposed to do..." Sora is obviously lost, and slightly upset. "Think, Sora. Think just one more time. About who's most special to you." the second Naminé speaks again, hand against her chest. "Call out to that piece of memory that glimmers faintly deep inside your heart." She smiles at him. "No matter how far away the light gets, your heart's voice will always reach it."

"Who's most special to me?" Sora says, looking at the charm in his hand. "That's an easy one. It's you, Nami--" The charm begins to glow, and changes into Kairi's good luck charm. As Sora looks down at its new form, he gasps and turns to look at Naminé. As she turns to look at him, she takes the form of Kairi.

The Dream Eaters are definitely something he'll keep in mind for later. He won't need to watch the memories again - every second of it is marked on his heart and now is his mind. But Sora knows that all of their time together can't have been bad otherwise he'd feel it. It's sad that he had to forget her but Sora trusts her with his memories - has done it more than once.

"I know he's not a bad guy, but I'll still hit him once." His voice is fond. Axel became like a brother to him... one that sometimes teased and annoyed him but dependable. A snort at the mention of Marluxia. "I'd say no one's as rude as Marluxia but that's not true at all."

Another squeeze to her hand when Naminé informs him that he'll start showing up now. Sora's eyes are fixed on the scene unfolding before them, not wanting to miss a second of the memories he lost. How earnest he was in believing that it was her who Sora remembered growing up with. In a way, it's true. Kairi and Naminé - when he looks at one, he can see the other in them. Yet they're both different. Like how he and Roxas are.

"You're wrong, you know. You do exist somewhere. Even after I couldn't remember you, you still existed in my heart. Your name was written in my journal. I see you in my dreams. You deserve to exist as much as me and Kairi do." Sora shifts to face her fully, still not letting go of her hand.

"One day I'll find a way for you and Roxas to be separate. Xion too. Because you're not just pieces of us, you're Somebodies."
