She scoffed out a laugh at that assumption, her expression incredulous as she moves to sit down. "Hardly," she muttered, almost as if sharing a private yet bittersweet joke with herself. "I just don't usually get to eat anything that isn't out of a can anymore. Kind of hard to grow anything fresh when the sun never comes out."
For as rundown as this city was, the ones she'd come from were worse. A lot worse.
Vanessa watched with a careful eye as he put together the salad. He didn't seem to be doing anything shifty, so that was appreciated, but she also had a hard time relaxing until it was over and he seemed to have done the exact same thing to both bowls.
"Thanks." She pulled it a little closer, her stomach suddenly crying out to be fed, and she gave in with a modicum of gusto. She shoved a bite in her mouth, chewing experimentally before she literally sighed in pleasure, forcing herself to slow down and savor it a little.
