TEST DRIVE MEME
You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.
Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits.
A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.
Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.
This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message.
Notices appear. The bulletin board feed lights up so you can read about the history. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid. You're to settle into your new home.
Take a peep
Content Warnings: Possible animal-thing death
Themes: Slice of life, it's like gremlins... kinda
On the first of April, small piles of dust with brightly colored eggs at the center will spring up over night. After a few hours the eggs will begin to hatch and out will come the smallest and brightest bunny-like creatures (the only notable differences from regular bunnies are the colors, size, and that they make no noise). They're friendly and immediately attach themselves (bond) to the first person to pick them up. One of the natives calls them "peeps" because they don't make a sound. All with unique personalities, the creatures can be found nibbling on the dust and needing no other form of food, and will shy away from any and all water sources.
If, however, any of them get wet - there will be a sudden and brief rain shower at noon - the creatures fur will turn black and they will begin attacking the others that didn't get wet. Stopping them is key, and the black creatures will either dash away from the community if given the chance or will need to be stopped.
OOC: All characters can keep a Peep! Any color! They are palm-sized and never grow larger than an adult hand.

But it did, of course.
"Not a whole lot to be happy about, I guess." She'd gone from one hellhole to another, and she couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel. The only upside here?
The sun actually came out.
"No, just not exactly sure where to go yet. There seems to be a lot that's already taken, but I'm used to that, too." People didn't like to share what they felt like they had claim over.

Seth motioned for her to come sit at the table in the breakfast nook just in case blondie showed up. He was going to get some of those aforementioned vegetables to eat. His metabolism was constantly hungry given the Reims diet. Seth swore he was losing muscle every day in the hell he had to call home.
"The table in the kitchen's fair game. So's the great room by the front. I don't know about you but fighting off the bullshit makes me hungry since I've gotta eat like a fuckin' rabbit." That was his way of asking if she wanted to join him.

Yet.
"Do you normally complain about food this much?" Her eyebrows lifted as she moved into the room. She wasn't here to make friends, but she did have to eat, and she couldn't remember the last time she did. Her stomach was angry with her, either way, so that was enough for her. "If you're sharing, I'm not gonna say no."

He filled two bowls with lettuce, cut up carrots, bell peppers, radishes and seeds that were either pumpkin or sunflower--maybe a medley of both. A lemon was squeezed over both and some olive oil. Hopefully whoever the oil belonged to didn't mind. Seth was of the mind that people should try hiding shit if they didn't want it used.
"Bon appetite," he uttered flatly while setting the bowls down on the table. One was placed in front of where the stranger was closer to. She could stand, sit, lay down for all Seth cared.

For as rundown as this city was, the ones she'd come from were worse. A lot worse.
Vanessa watched with a careful eye as he put together the salad. He didn't seem to be doing anything shifty, so that was appreciated, but she also had a hard time relaxing until it was over and he seemed to have done the exact same thing to both bowls.
"Thanks." She pulled it a little closer, her stomach suddenly crying out to be fed, and she gave in with a modicum of gusto. She shoved a bite in her mouth, chewing experimentally before she literally sighed in pleasure, forcing herself to slow down and savor it a little.

Richie would've been in heaven. His younger brother always came to mind whenever he thought of sunlight, since he'd turned into a vampire. Seth would not have appreciated the concept. Too easy for culebras to get out of control, beaches wouldn't be as much fun to relax on and without growing rabbit food, cows wouldn't have anything to eat so there still wouldn't be any goddamn steak.
"Hey, slow down there, Hoover. This shit will hit you like a ton of bricks and you'll never get out of the porcelain throne. I can scrounge up some more if you're still hungry." Or he'd just give her his. Seth could go without a little longer. No doubt his girlfriend would arrive sooner than later and they'd eat.

Exactly. It's vampire heaven. That's the whole problem.
"A volcano erupted and ash has been blocking out the sun ever since."
She chuckles bittersweetly under her breath as she swallows, looking over at him. "No, this is perfect. Putting too much in my stomach will just make me feel like shit anyway."

He looked up at her explanation of a volcano erupting. Something had gone Mount Vesuvius but covered the sun instead of the land. That seemed a bit much until he thought about hell unleashed on earth thanks to a topless bar in Mexico that he'd been at with his brother.
"Slow it down or you'll still end up feelin' like shit," he added in a friendly tone--well, friendly for Seth. He picked a little more at his rabbit food then looked up. "Is that it? Just livin' in darkness or there more to it?"
Because the idea of no sun led to things that go bump in the night in his mind.

If it'll make him feel better, she'll slow down her chewing. She even gives herself a break between bites.
Considering she's used to a Marine barking orders as the closest thing she has to a friend, Seth's attitude is almost normal for her.
"I wish it was just that. Instead, the vampires decided that they were gonna have a free-for-all. They took over Seattle first, then I assume the rest of the country."
